University Stadium
With its outstanding contribution and impeccable reputation, the Department of Physical Education at the University of Calicut holds a unique position in sports among the various Universities in the country.Established in 1968, the Department has produced a number of sporting heroes and heroines who have won many prestigious and coveted honors including Padmasree, Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards.
Stars
Padmasree Olympian P.T. Usha, the finest athlete India has ever seen, is a star rose and shined here. M.D. Valsamma in athletics and late Jimmy George in volleyball are yet another alumni of the Department who won Padmasree, the highest civilian award. Anju Bobby George, another former student, was honoured with most prestigious sports award Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Her husband coach and Dronachayra award winner Bobby George is also a former star of the University. Besides Usha, Valsamma, Anju and Jimmy, the University's athletes Saramma and Mercykuttan, volleyball players Saly Joseph and Cyril. C Vellore have won the reputed Arjuna Award for their excellent performance. Olympian Bobby Aloysius is the yet another stalwart the University has produced.
Titles
With ceaseless effort of the Department, the University teams could clinch a number of titles in state and national sports meets. Basket ball team won national/zonal merits in 1970, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989 and 1990. While the badminton teams grabbed titles in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1988, the volleyball team made their mark by winning Prime Minister's Trophy in 1975.

Calicut University Team placed 3rd in All India Inter-University Yoga Team with Padmasree Bharathbhusan, President International Yoga Federation.
They were also the winners in 1976, 1980 and 1990 at national or zonal levels. in the eighties and nineties, the athletics team of the university won national titles almost every year.
Trainers

The real force behind these triumphs is the constant effort of its trainers. Former directors E.J. Jacob, G. Boy Tharyan, veteran football coach C.P.M. Usman Koya, athletics trainers S.S. Kaimal and Mohammed Ashraf, badminton coach S. Muralidharan, international volleyball star and guide K. Abdul Rahman, erstwhile champion and present soccer coach Victor Manjila, Basket ball player and coach of national repute K.N.K Nair, former State captain and cricket coach Babu Acharath, T.P. Bhaskara Kurup, K.P. Venugopal are few to mention.

Infrastructure
The department has also a 50000 seater outdoor ground and two indoor stadium. With the 8 line 400m, two football grounds, two hockey fields a sophisticated cricket pitch, tennis courts, assorted volleyball and basketball courts, this out-door stadium in the biggest one in the region.
