       The Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research in Hindi was established in July 1971. Being a Department in the backward area of Malabar, it has played an important role in developing higher studies and research in Hindi in this region. The Department could give academic leadership in some of the new areas of Hindi studies. During the last three and half decades, the Department could organise many important Seminars, Workshops and Refresher courses.
       The All India Bharatiya Hindi Parishad Sammelan (1976) and Barannikov Centenary International Seminar on Translation and World Culture and such other seminars have proved to be a landmark in the history of the Department. The first head of the Department Dr. Malik Mohammed was honoured with Padmashri and Nehru Fellowship for his contributions in the field of studies on Bhakti movement.
The former Head of the Department, Prof. G. Gopinathan was awarded the Natalieuraskar of the Translators Association of India and Sauharda Samman of the U. Govt. Being a visiting Professor in the Warsaw University (1993-94), Paris University (1991) and Helsinki University (1997-2000) he could establish international links in the field of Hindi and Translation studies.   

Research Programmes
        The Department is offering M.Phil. and Ph.D Programmes during the time.More than 30 numbers of Ph.D have been awarded from the Department during the last five years. At present there are 43 Research scholars (Full time/Part time/FIP) doing research in the Department on different areas of Hindi Language and Literature. 

Special Areas of Study and Research
       The Department is providing opportunity to students on diverse areas of studies like Drama and Theatre, Women’s Literature, Dalit Literature, Indian Literature, Comparative Literature, Official Language, Linguistics, Translation, Cultural Studies, Folklore, Functional Hindi, Hindi Computing, etc. 

 Publications of the Department
      The Department has published a book titled “Yugasparshi Kavi Pant” from New Delhi in 2002, which was edited by former Professor Dr. Iqbal Ahmed. One book on “Premchand – Ikkeesveem Sadee mein” in 2007 edited by Dr. A. Achuthan by Publication Division of the University of Calicut.  

 Courses offered
       The Department is offering MA courses in Hindi Language & Literature and Functional Hindi and Translation, M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes, P.G. Diploma in Translation and Secretarial Practice in Hindi (Part-time) and Certificate course in Spoken Hindi. The intake in M.A. courses – 30 & 20 respectively, M.Phil – 12, P.G.Diploma – 25 and Certificate course is 25.
       The syllabus of both P.G. courses has been prepared under the Choice Based Credit Semester System. The Department is doing a great job in updating the Language and Literature Studies considering the social needs of the society by incorporating the modern trends of literature like Women Literature, Dalit Literature, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Environmental Studies, Folklore Studies and functional areas like Hindi Computing, Official Language Hindi and Information technology in Official Language implementation. Initial steps have already been taken by introducing Cultural Studies, Dalit Literature, Indian Literature, Feminist writing, Hindi Writings in Kerala and Hindi Computing in the present Post Graduate Syllabus.
       The Department has computer facility to make equip the students to be familiar with the Hindi computing. Internet facility has already been provided to make the students aware about latest Hindi software’s and other online Hindi tool kits provided by Department of Official language under Ministry of Home affairs.
