Department of Zoology
Established in 1963
Head of the Department :  Dr . Y. Shibu Vardhanan

University of Calicut, the largest University in Kerala established in the year 1968 with historic mission of educational excellence in Malabar region of the state. Department of Zoology was established in 1963 as a satellite center of Kerala University and became the part of Calicut University in 1968. Since the inception Department of Zoology made remarkable achievements in various fields of Biology. Our traditional research leadership has made tremendous achievements with strong footprints in Basic Science Research and made the Department of Zoology an excellent centre for teaching and research.
The Department currently offers M.Sc. (CCSS), M. Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. M. Sc. students specialize in various aspects of General and Applied Entomology. Research groups include Entomology, Endocrinology, Acarology, Biosphere Ecology, Biochemistry, Biopesticides, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Microbiology. The Department faculties have produced nearly 175 Ph.Ds and published more than a thousand of research papers.

Interactive 3-D Virtual Museum & Geometric Morphometrics (GMM): A revolutionary solution for future inventory programme
Shape to function
In 2012, Department of Zoology has been recognized with the special assistance program by the University Grant Commission for implementing a new program entitled “Integrated and interactive digitalization and DNA barcoding in insects and mites of Western Ghats”. The ultimate goal of this program is to generate DNA barcoding and mapping of geometric morphometrics of insects & mites. Under this program, the Department of Zoology empowered successfully in the advancement of taxonomic and systematic practices using emerging area of “Geometric morphometrics” for documenting shape information of organisms.  Presently, the Department of Zoology crosses a milestone achievement in standardization of a new technique for shape analysis under the Co-ordinatorship of Dr. Y. Shibu Vardhanan in collaboration with Prof. F. James Rohlf, Distinguished Professor, Emeritus. Dept. of Ecol. & Evol. & Research, Dept. of Anthropology, Stony Brook University 11794-4364, New York, U.S.A and Prof. Christian Peter Klingenberg, Faculty of Life Science, University of Manchester, Michael smith Building, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PT, U.K.  The Co-ordinator has acquired expertise in geometric morphometrics by attending a training programme equivalent to 4 European Credit Transfer System (4 ECTS) organized by Transmitting Science, S. L.U- NIF B65731903 -NIF- IVA ESB 65731903, C/Gardenia, 2- Urb. Can. Claramunt - 08784 Piera (Barcelona) - Spain.
To develop molecular barcoding and species based geometric morphometric shape information along with symmetry, asymmetry and sexual dimorphism in insects and mites.
To develop integrated geometric morphometric based software for species diagnosis and interactive digitalization of 3D image of insects and mites diversity. Interactive 3-D virtual museum concept is next generation documentation considerably reduces repeated sacrifice of organism/biodiversity for education and research. Multi-gene barcoding will help to overcome present limitations of single gene barcoding system in molecular taxonomy.

Calicut University Zoology Association (CUZA)-Responsible community service
Functioning since 1999 provides an arena for students and faculty to arrange co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Seminars, workshops, field study tours, extension activities, cultural performance, sports activities etc are arranged every year.

Alumni Association
Founded in 2001, tries to bring the alumni working in various institutions in and outside country together, to share their golden memories and achievements for the benefit of the current students
Parent Teacher Association
Works for the welfare of the students.
Prof. K. J. Joseph Endowment Award
Instituted in 1987, in honor of the founder Professor & Head of the Department, Professor K. J. Joseph, honors the best outgoing student of the Department every year with a cash prize and a citation. The function also includes an invited talk in the field of Entomology.
