The last century saw a leap forward in the struggle for women’s human rights. In many countries women won the right to vote and take part in government. Many women acquired economic independence and social status, unthinkable a hundred years earlier. Several countries have adopted constitutions or legislations banning discrimination on grounds of gender. But still gender equality remains a cherished distant dream for women all over the world. Hence the Centre for Women’s Studies proposes to organise a National Seminar on Gender Equality :A Human Rights Perspective.

The seminar is scheduled in the first week of March 2007. The seminar is an endeavour to provide a platform for Academic and Research Staff working in the field of Women’s Studies and Human Rights to discuss relevant and vital issues pertaining to Women’s human rights and provide insights into the related long term policies and solutions. |
Themes of the Seminar Cultural relativism and Women’s Human Rights. Women, Violence and Human Rights System. Women’s Human Rights Issues in Disaster Management, Displacement and Water Rights. Women’s Health and Human Rights. Human Rights of Marginalised Women. Impact of Liberalisation, Privatisation and Globalisation on Women’s Human Rights. Women’s Human Rights and Indian Judiciary. Abstracts of papers on the above themes are invited for presentation (15 minutes). The abstracts and filled in Registration Form should reach the Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Calicut, Kerala – 673 635 on or before 30 th January, 2007 and the last date for the full text is 15 th February 2007.
